Photonics Engineer

Full time | On-site | Enschede, the Netherlands

Job Description

Your mission is to bridge the gap between thin film lithium niobate (TFLN) photonic chip technology and the future of wireless communications. You will transform our TFLN chips into high-performance prototypes that will eventually redefine the next-gen wireless communication modules.

Objectives

  • PDK development: Design Photonic Integrated Circuits (PICs) with essential photonic components such as couplers, spirals, microresonators, while taking nanofabrication and experimental data into account.
  • PIC device characterization: Build experimental RF/optical set-ups and characterize the electrical and optical properties of photonic devices, and provide advanced evaluation of measurement data.
  • Modulator designs: Perform optical/RF co-simulation to develop TFLN modulators with optimized performance.
  • Provide nanofabrication feedback: Ensure that the nanofabrication team has reliable data to optimize the TFLN production process.
  • Customer engagement: Support customer relations, demos and visits, and compose technical documentation.

Requirements

Essentials

  • Master's or PhD degree in photonics, applied physics, electrical engineering, or related fields.
  • Demonstrable experience (published/presented work) in integrated photonics, either academically or industrially.
  • Proficiency with photonics/multi-physics simulation software such as Lumerical, COMSOL, HFSS.
  • Proficiency with photonic circuit layout software such as KLayout, GDSfactory, PHIDL, or OptoDesigner.
  • Proficiency with state-of-the-art optical/RF testing equipment, including OSAs, ESAs, VNAs, and real-time oscilloscopes.
  • Advanced Python skills to automate complex measurements and analyze measurement data.
  • A product-oriented, collaborative, and proactive mindset with excellent communication skills.

Other

  • Experience with TFLN photonics and/or high-speed modulator characterization is a big plus.
  • Basic know-how of photonic nanofabrication processes is desirable.
  • Basic know-how about microwave photonics links.
  • Prior experience leading photonic chip tape-outs.
